What aesthetics are “in” for 2024?

Throughout my blog posts, I have emphasized that styles and trends constantly change and evolve each year, month, or season. Some things will stay "in," and others will go "out," but the one style that is forever trendy is change.

Because of social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, several "aesthetics" have consumed the fashion world throughout this year. People are seeing these styles on social media and taking to Pinterest to see more of the aesthetic and how they can translate that to their everyday style, depending on the season and occasion.

Today, I will tell you the five recent aesthetics that have been hot and "in" throughout 2024 and what they mean when styling an outfit.

  1. Coquette

The first one I will discuss is what some would call "girl core," which is a trending style and aesthetic called coquette.

I consider the coquette style defined by feminine energy with a mix of sweetness and romance. This includes bows, pink, lace, corsets, florals, soft pastel colors, and just being girly. The style is heavily inspired and influenced by historical periods like the Victorian and the 1950s but adds a modern twist.

I love this aesthetic because I love anything girly and am here for the feminine energy brought to life through fashion. It carries such sweetness and innocence in the very best way possible.

An outfit example of this would be a long floral dress with lace details accompanied by a pink bow hair accessory. One brand you can look into that can easily carry out this image would be Love Shack Fancy. Love Shack is a high-end brand that has shaped its image of this aesthetic to a perfect T.

2. Disco Inferno

The next one is Disco Inferno, inspired by glam rock and according to The British Fashion Council, it is heavily influenced by an iconic nightclub called Studio 54.

This style includes bright greens, reds, purples, feathers, lavish fur coats, and anything sparkly. Another way to describe it is "Dark Disco." Cher reflects this trend well because her outfits were honestly ahead of their time. They were lavish and considered a little scandalous, but they shaped much of the fashion world. Her looks left a legacy.

This is one style that both men and women can carry out; it is a very generous aesthetic that isn't limited to women. Men can participate by wearing yellow, blue, sparkly suits or pants and metallics.

Overall, this aesthetic was heavily influenced by the 1970s and its extravagant disco scene. As we all know, trends come in cycles, and all styles come back around. This style has resurfaced recently and has been shown in several clothing brands' spring and fall lines.

3. "Mob wife"

Now it is getting interesting! Mobwife was a very prominent style this past winter. This aesthetic is iconic because it is such a unique, dark style, and its subtle and lavish fashion makes it identifiable.

This style is the result of Hollywood's classic mob wife image. According to CNN, consider Edie Falco or Drea de Matteo when defining this aesthetic in "The Sopranos." Sharon Stone is also in "Casino" and Lorraine Bracco is in "Goodfellas."

To execute this style, you need an all-black outfit, a faux-fur coat, black sunglasses, black boots, anything animal print, and bold jewelry pieces. Other looks include leather, messy and big hair (the bigger, the better), vintage pieces to add the old money look, smokey makeup, and a designer bag.

Even though this is not my style, I love this aesthetic. It is very cool and different from other trends. While many popular styles are light and fun, this one brings a dark academia feel and is perfect for the fall and winter.

4. 80s glam

Up next is 80s glam, which I'm excited to talk about! You may think this is the same as Disco Inferno, but they differ. They are the complete opposite of each other. 80s glam can be disco but bright colors, or it can be that glamorous Hollywood star in the 80s vibe.

According to Blue 17 vintage clothing, 80s glam was heavily inspired by supermodels and style icons ranging from Madonna to Joan Collins, but Madonna was the style icon of the 80s as a whole. This was the age of big everything: big hair, big shoulder pads, mini skirts, an emphasis on animal prints, dramatic earrings, colorful jewelry, and bright colors.

Today, 80s glam is making a comeback, but of course, it now has a modern twist. One way this is being carried out is by barrel-leg jeans. Barrel-leg jeans are oversized jeans that stick out on the sides to give that oversized look, but have a tight and high-waisted feel. Free People is mainly known for this style of jeans, and they have gold and silver metallic versions of these jeans, which are definitely 80s glam.

Another thing that so many brands have incorporated is fringe. When most people think of fringe, they think of the 70s, but this is 80s glam because of its lavish feel. Fringe denim and leather jackets, especially bright-colored ones, are a great way to carry out this aesthetic.

This trend is so fun, and it was carried out correctly by current fashion brands. I would not consider my style 80s glam, and I haven't incorporated it, but I have wanted to. So, if you are in the same boat as me, an excellent way to start is to get a pair of these barrel jeans and start incorporating bright colors!

5. Athletic Prep

The last style I am going to discuss is athletic Prep. In today's world, athletic clothes and loungewear are a natural part of our society and fashion. Even "luxury sweats" have become more incorporated into our daily styles after COVID-19.

Athletic Prep is talking about the athletic look but adding a preppy twist. When I think of this style, I automatically think of Ivy League schools, old money, country clubs, and the Hamptons.

This style emphasizes tennis skirts, athletic dresses, and sweaters tied over shoulders. It is suitable for both men and women. Wear pastels like white, pink, blue, green, and yellow to achieve this look.

A blue button-up shirt, pleated tennis skirt, white sweater tied around your shoulders, a white headband, and small black square sunglasses are the perfect combinations for a woman to execute this style. A man can carry this aesthetic out by wearing a white varsity-type sweater and khakis.

I love this style because it is so timeless. I love how it takes athletic and casual wear but makes it classy, and you give off that old-money vibe. I wear a lot of loungewear, and lately, I have been trying to incorporate this style, but this aesthetic will stay around through these coming summer months.

If you want to try it out, now is the perfect time. So many brands offer the resources to create the look, which can be achieved within the budget. Just do some research, test the waters, and let us know how you like it!

Overall, these trends are so fun and can add so much personality to your style. I know it can be scary to try out new things, especially when it comes to clothes, but life is all about change and trying new things, so don't be scared to take a chance on one of these trends, I bet you will look amazing in them!
